ThinkProgress folds during 2019 NAHJ conference

As the Excellence in Journalism conference lured hundreds of industry professionals to San Antonio this week in celebration of journalism, a prominent left-leaning news site folded, resulting in the layoff of 12 editors and reporters.

ThinkProgress, an influential progressive media website, officially shut down Friday.

The Center for American Progress, the Democratic think tank behind the website, plans to transition the editorially independent outlet into an academic writing site for its scholars.

According to The Daily Beast, which first broke the news of the shutdown, officials at the CAP placed ThinkProgress on sale but were unable to secure a new publisher.

The Latino Reporter reached out to seven former ThinkProgress employees — five declined and two did not respond by the publication’s deadline.
